Phantom Abyss is a massive asynchronous multiplayer game that casts players into procedurally-generated temples and tasks them with retrieving the sacred relics hidden within deadly chambers. Intrepid adventurers will dodge scores of hidden traps, leap treacherous chasms, and flee relentless guardians through branching paths until one of the relics are claimed or the devices of death overwhelm them. Be warned, you only get one attempt at each temple and failure or settling for a lesser relic means you will never see that temple again... The cleverest players will use the phantom runs of failed attempts from other players to their advantage and avoid the missteps and mistakes that led to their doom. There’s also a dynamic arsenal of whips to unlock, a mysterious new area called The Rift, and permanent upgrades to help you delve deeper into the darkness.

The more successful runs you put in, the more of the Adventure Mode’s four core currencies you unlock — one from each major zone — which can be spent on permanent upgrades, like extra health or a stronger whip crack. The more of these you unlock, the more powerful your adventurer becomes and the better equipped you are to handle anything a given temple throws at you.

Since it grapples almost instantaneously, it increases the window of time you have to grapple a platform while falling fast, which is how I've gotten the most use out of it. You can drop through tall rooms with abandon and more safely snag a platform to break your fall.

The most obvious step forward is via claiming the relic at the end of a temple, which is then placed upon one of the dozens of altars in the starting hub section.
